Hi Christine, thanks for stopping by.

For me, it's not that it's too depressing or too dark. It's just that this issue was virtually an exact retread of things we've seen before. We're supposed to believe that the characters are shocked or worried about this decline in Matt Murdock, but they're acting as if it's something new. The point is, if you've been reading the book for any substantial period of time, it's not.

Being disappointed with this apparent lack of any direction but backwards is hardly the same thing as saying "Daredevil should be all bright and happy. Why can't comics be more like the '60s?"

I'm a huge fan of what Brubaker has done on this book, and I prefer his take on the character to Bendis's. However, this issue, while certainly good and well-written, was not all that it could have been and the art didn't help. As for retreading old themes, I actually like that fans are starting to say "enough is enough" in the whole depression department, because I'm so used to seeing fans begging for the book to be even more dark and gritty. I think that writers may be a little too afraid to tamper with the formula here. While I see no reason to return to the carefree character that Karl Kesle wrote, his take on the character showed that Matt Murdock can still be in character without being completely depressed. As for Brubaker, I just plain trust him. I trust that he knows where he's going with this book and the cast of characters and I anticipate an upswing from now on. Either way, I'm looking forward to reading it.

What I wrote about this issue over at ComicMix was along the same lines. Dating back to the Bendis run, the theme has largely been one of deconstructing the Daredevil character, and Bendis signed off with what seemed like a "can't get worse" moment. It looked like Brubaker was headed in a new direction, but then it's fallen into the same cycle of making Matt's life worse and worse. Well, things can always get worse (if I've learned anything from this series, it's that that phrase is a truism for a reason), but I don't want to keep reading this series unless something new happens.

About Azaceta: He's been doing a bunch of work for Boom, and it's been pretty good - much in line with his art here. The Potter's Field series was especially good. He's also doing the BPRD: 1946 series for Dark Horse.
